Coronation "football team"

The picture was taken at the Coronation celebrations in June 1953. The banner says 'Leave it to the women. Victorious we reign.'

In fact, there was no ladies football team in Wickhamford, so the ladies had just dressed up for the day. Trevor Southern and Jill Roberts have given us some names.

Standing at the rear are Mr & Mrs Knight. The goalie, the lady with the ball, is Nellie Camden (wife of George Camden). The lady on the right side holding the banner is Margaret Firth (nee Tigwell); her parents kept the Sandys Arms. Now going clockwise from the front: Betty Coles (nee Johnson) daughter of Gladys Johnson, Gladys Johnson (nee Southern), Lena Folkes, Phyllis Sutton, Vera Sutton, Jean Southern (Trevor's mother), Alice Taylor (holding the cups), Cynthia Griffiths (nee Southern) - sat immediately behind Alice Taylor, Violet Smith (nee Southern) - sat behind Cynthia
