Mary Dent BRODHURST (née SANDYS) (1839-1914)

Biographical Details

Mary Dent Brodhurst (1839-1914), née Sandys, was a friend of the Brown Constable family when they lived in Allahabad, India; Mela Brown Constable (fiancée of Cyril Sladden) knew Mrs Brodhurst from her childhood days in Allahabad.  Many years later, when Mela was nursing in Bournemouth, Mrs Brodhurst was also living in Bournemouth at the time. 

Mrs Brodhurst was born at Jessore, Bengal, in 1839, the daughter of Teignmouth Sandys, a Civil and Sessions Judge at Behar.  She was only 16 when she married Maynard Brodhurst of the Bengal Civil Service.  She had nine children, one of whom, Mary Caroline, was the wife of Mela’s godfather, Brook Deedes.  Her husband having died in 1890, she ended her days at Hasland, Grosvenor Road, Bournemouth, where Mela visited her when she was nursing in Bournemouth.

Mary Brodhurst died on 6th April 1914 at Hasland, Bournemouth.
