Christine Marie Louise Butler (1890-1955), known as Chris, was the niece of Eugénie Sladden and the cousin of Jack, May, Kathleen, Ethel, Arthur, George, Cyril and Juliet Sladden.

Chris was born on Christmas Day 1890 at Surbiton, Surrey, the youngest of nine children of Charles Butler, a tobacco manufacturer, and his wife, Fanny Eliza Jacqueline (née Mourilyan).  She was baptized on 7th February 1891 at St Mark’s Church, Surbiton.  She was aged seven when his father died in 1898.  Chris attended a boarding school at Bexhill.

Chris, who never married, remained living in the family home at Amroth, Woburn Hill, Addlestone, until her mother’s death in 1927.  Following her mother’s death, Chris moved to 15 St Mary’s Mansions, St Mary’s Terrace, Paddington.  In September 1939, at the start of the Second World War, Chris was staying at Sandringham Hotel, 21 St Mary Street, Cardiff.  She was described as having private means, but her occupation was “Assistant Society Organiser at present”.  After the war, Chris’ address was 10 St Mary’s Mansions, Paddington.

Chris died on 4th November 1955 at 10 St Mary’s Mansions, Paddington.  Two of her nieces, Iris Gwendoline Campbell Shaw (daughter of her brother, Charlie, who died in 1915) and Evelyn Audrey Garrard (daughter of her sister, Evie, who died in 1925) were executors of her will.
