HUTCHINGS, Richard William (1892-1973) – Royal Navy

Ordinary Seaman Richard William Hutchings (1892-1973) moved to Wickhamford after his period of service in the war.  He was born in Paddington but moved to Badsey as a child, where he attended the school from 1896.

Richard was a market gardener when drafted into the Royal Navy on 17th October 1917 (No J79683).  He appears to have only been based at HMS Pembroke, a training and shore establishment at Chatham and was demobilised in May 1919.  His service record also mentions time aboard HMS Proserpine, a redundant cruiser moored at Chatham.  He appears on the 1919 Absent Voters’ List as from the parish of Badsey.

He was living at 4, Council Cottages, Wickhamford in 1924 where he appears on the Electoral Register.
