Emily Elizabeth WOOD (later HILTON) (1843-1926)

Biographical Details

Emily Elizabeth Wood (1843-1926) was the cousin of Eugénie Sladden (née Mourilyan).

Emily Wood was born on 29th August 1843 in Dinapore, Bengal, India, the second of four children of Thomas Wood, a Clerk in Holy Orders, by his first wife, Georgiana Elizabeth (née Harrison).  Emily’s mother died in 1847 a year after the birth of her youngest child, Thomas.  Emily’s father married again in India and four half-siblings were born in the 1850s (though one died in infancy).

By 1861, the Wood family were back in England and living in Speen, Berkshire.  Emily’s step-mother died in 1862.  Her father married again the following year, and they later moved to Sandwich in Kent where St Ninians, the Wood family home, was located on Strand Street.  Emily moved with the family to Northbourne Rectory in 1877 when her father became the Vicar.

In 1882, Emily married a widower, Thomas Denne Hilton, 21 years her senior, who was a physician (not practising).  In 1891 they were living at Milestone House, Deal.  Thomas died in 1896.  In 1911, Emily was living at Westholme, St Andrews Walk, Deal, with one servant.

Emily died at 40 Howard Road, Woodside, Croydon, Surrey, on 29th January 1926.
