1914 wedding – John Payne & Emily Stewart

Married in Badsey Church on the 3rd August 1914 were 27-year-old John Payne (1887-1966) and  27-year-old Emily Stewart (1886-1959).

Emily was the daughter of William (1859-1943) and Charlotte Stewart, née Hartwell (1860-1939), shown right of the bride, who themselves were married in Badsey Church on 19th February 1881. The family lived in Aldington where William worked as a cowman for Mr Savory. In the back row shown left is Walter Stewart (1889-1953) with his fiancée, Frances Ellen Field (they married two years later). Alongside Frances Ellen is William Stewart (1882-1956). During World War I he appeared before a Military Tribunal, seeking exemption as a conscientious objector; he suffered imprisonment in Dartmoor for his beliefs.

John and Emily Payne moved to Birmingham where they had four children.

We are grateful to Peter Stewart for providing us with a copy of this photograph.
