Mela at The General Hospital, Birmingham

In December 1914, whilst working at The General Hospital, Birmingham, Mela Brown Constable had a photo of herself taken in nurse’s uniform.  As she explained in a letter to her fiancée, Cyril Sladden, in a letter of 12th December 1914, “I know I look rather serious in it but I was just preparing to smile when I found the photographer had taken the photo.”
