1876 – Petition from Badsey parishioners concerning testing Religious Instruction in Public Elementary Schools

June 1876

To the Honourable the Commons of Great Britain and Ireland in Parliament assemble.

The humble petition of the inhabitants of the parish of Badsey in the county of Worcester humbly sheweth:

That your petitioners regard with satisfaction the “Elementary Education Bill” recently introduced into Parliament by Her Majesty’s Government.

That your petitioners pray your Honourable House may make such arrangements as they may deem efficient for testing annually the Religious Instruction imparted in those Public Elementary Schools which may [?] such inspection, and for encouraging it by a contingent increase in the Annual Grants made by Parliament.

And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
