RANSOME, Maurice John

Biographical Details

Maurice John Ransome (1862-1921) was a first cousin of Charles Binyon.  His mother, Emily, was the sister of Charles’ father, Frederick.

Maurice Ransome was born at Lindale in Cartmel, Lancashire, the second of eight children of the Reverend John Henry Ransome, Perpetual Curate of Lindale, and his wife, Emily (née Binyon).  His father later became Vicar of Kirkoswald.

Maurice was educated at St John’s College, Cambridge, then followed his father into the church.  He was curate of Lytham, Lancashire 1884-1886; curate of Malpas, Crewe 1887-1889; rector of Croglin, Carlisle 1889-1891; curate of Tarvin, Cheshire 1893-1894; St Thomas, Stockport, Cheshire from 1894; finally Rector of Pulverbatch, Shropshire, where he remained until his death.

In 1908 Maurice married Janet Dalrymple and had two children.  He died at Pulverbatch Rectory on 26th March 1921.
