Exciting find in an Aldington garden

In the garden of The Old Chapel, Aldington, I recently unearthed a small medallion, 22 mm in diameter, made of brass.

When I cleaned it up, a clock face emerged on one side and lots of small writing on the other.  I was delighted to find that it was a link to the Baptist Chapel which thrived here in the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth. I would only have been half as pleased had it been a gold sovereign!

It holds three biblical texts, all relating to time, and it may have been awarded to a child in recognition of good timekeeping when attending Sunday School?

On the clock face side is:  "It is time to seek the Lord" taken from Hosea 10.12.

On the reverse side are two verses: "Behold now is the accepted time. Behold now is the day of salvation" (2 Corinthians 6.2) and "So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom" (Psalm 90.12).

It was found only a few inches below the surface and no test pit was involved!

Having gardened here for thirty nine years we are amazed that we hadn't found it before. It was obviously time for it to give itself up!
