Badsey Society Newsletter No 27, January 2009

Description

Quarterly Badsey Society newsletter sent to members. Events: talk by Bob Brown of Cotswold Garden Flowers on “Clues in the Landscape” and “60’s” evening at Badsey First School where members viewed photographic slides from photograph surveys of village taken in 1968 and 2008. DVD’s containing 1,500 photographs were available for purchase. We took survey of members on that evening and its outcome was that 87% of those responding were aged over 50! Future events: AGM including some talks on Badsey; launch of next Society publication; annual Whit Walk and stand at Badsey Flower Show. In September Robin Parkes, retired GP, from Sussex contacted the website concerning his Badsey ancestors, John and Martha Brittain who had eight children, four of whom died in 1785. Robin looked at burials between 1750 and 1805 and wondered whether we could tell him why there were so many deaths in 1785. We referred him to our newsletter 19 containing article “Badsey suffers from a volcanic eruption”. Robin said that our explanation may well be right but also somebody from outside of the village could have started an outbreak of an infectious disease. When 1911 census became generally available Martin Clements of Redditch contacted us. He was surprised to see that his grandfather Harry Clements and family lived at Tower View, Badsey in 1914. Sarah Pask current owner bought Tower View from Jim Brailsford and Jim had told her that the reason she had been continually digging up old animal bones in her garden was because a butcher had lived in property previously and buried carcasses in garden. Harry had been a butcher in Evesham and we think he worked for Horace Wheatley at The Poplars! In the future we would be advertising for volunteer transcribers so that census could be placed on the website. Committee members: Will Dallimore (Chairman), Maureen Spinks (Secretary), Terry Sparrow (Treasurer), Ian Gibson, Mike Lovatt, Jane Neill, Richard Phillips, Neil Thould.
