Arthur Savory - 1921 Jun 11, Page torn from a magazine with pencilled calculations

Description

An item called That's Funny, about Charles L Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), Professor of Higher Mathematics at Christ Church, Oxford, who was responsible for a peculiar calculation concerning your brothers and sisters. Having followed the various stages and got a number, the right-hand figure should give the number of deaths, the middle figure the number of living sisters and the left-hand figue the number of living brothers. Reverend Allsebrook did the calculation for AHS (Arthur Herbert Savory) and for GFS (his wife, Georgina Ford Savory). The answer for AHS came to one living brother, four living sisters, three dead siblings; the answer for GFS came to one living brother, one living sister, no dead siblings. He has written "Correct" against each calculation.

Supporting Information

Arthur Savory's living siblings were Horace Reginald Savory (1850-1937), Anna Maria Savory (1841-1925), Ellen Gertrude Savory (1842-1924), Adeline Matilda Scott (1844-1931), Constance Theodora Savory (1853-1946); his dead siblings were Albert Savory (c1844-c1889), Beatrice Mary Smallpiece (1845-1912), Francis Evance Savory (1856-1920). Georgina Savory's living siblings were Selina (1851-?) and Edward Bagnall Poulton (1856-1943). Arthur Savory died on 17th July 1921. He had been due to travel from his home in Hampshire to Worcestershire to visit Allsebrook in early July but was prevented by illness, so obviously Savory was uppermost in Allsebrook's thoughts at this time.
