HAINES, Jack - News article 2009, Wickhamford lad becomes an England star

Magazine article about Jack Haines (1920-1987) of Wickhamford, a local sporting hero. He played firstly for Badsey School, then Evesham Schoolboys before being signed for Evesham Town. He then went to Cheltenham Town and for a brief period to Liverpool FC. His big chance came when he signed by Swansea in 1939, one of the top clubs at the time. After national service, Jack was signed by Leicester City in 1947 and then by West Bromwich Albion in 1948. In December 1948 he was selected to play for England.
