Description

Newspaper article about World War I sweethearts, Cecilia Barnard of Badsey and George Mason of Wickhamford, as told to Pat Smith by Michael Barnard. Cecilia Barnard died in 1993 with her love letters under her pillow, ending nearly 80 years of devotion to the memory of dashing Second Lieutenant George Mason who died leading his men during an early morning attack on a portion of the Hindenberg Line at Bullecourt in May 1917. Mentions her sisters, Gladys, Helen, Evelyn and Sylvia Barnard. The family has just gained permission to have a special plaque placed on the southern wall of St John the Baptist Church, Wickhamford, under George's memorial window, dedicated to Cecilia and her love for him.
