Wedding gift for A W Barrett & Sylvia Byrd

Barrel given by Mr & Mrs Arthur Savory of Aldington Manor to Albert William Barrett (1869-1939) on his wedding day in 1898.  Albert Barrett was a farmer who had been born at Temple Guiting.  In 1898 he married Sylvia Byrd at the Baptist Church, Evesham.  Sylvia was the daughter of Thomas Byrd who lived at Ivy House, Aldington, which was opposite Aldington Manor.  The inscription on the barrel says:

PRESENTED TO A W BARRETT BY MR & MRS A H SAVORY OF ALDINGTON MANOR, EVESHAM, ON OCCASION OF HIS MARRIAGE, OCT 17TH 1898

At the time of the 1901 census, Albert's brother, John, was living at Rose Cottage, Aldington, and working as bailiff for Arthur Savory.  It is possible that Albert may previously worked as bailiff for Arthur Savory as the barrel was given as a gift to him.

We are grateful to Albert Barrett’s granddaughter, Angela Barrett, for providing a photo of this barrel.
