Wheatley lorry

When Roy first came to live in Badsey in 1948, he worked for Fred Wheatley.  When there was no work on Fred’s land during the winter of 1948, Roy went sprout picking for Fred’s brother, Charlie, who had a farm at Bretforton.  Charlie grew a lot of sprouts on the Cotswolds and employed about 20 to 30 sprout pickers.  “C J & I M Wheatley” stands for Charles Josiah & Iris Maisie Wheatley.  Maisie was the widow of Charlie’s older brother, Arthur, who had died in 1933.  Charlie and Maisie never married, but they had a good life together and ran a very successful farm.
