The dialogue continues between Charles Binyon and Ralph Smith, with Binyon providing background information about the Evesham Asparagus Growers' Association.

  • Robert Ralph (known as Ralph) Smith (1874-1959), the son of a shepherd, began his working life as an agricultural labourer, but then became a prominent Market Gardener. He was one of the founder members of the Littleton and Badsey Growers and for many years was President of the Vale of Evesham Asparagus Growers’ Association.  According to his obituary, asparagus growing was the subject he knew and liked best, and his knowledge of the crop was unsurpassed.  Unsurprisingly, he spoke in the broadcast about his work growing ‘grass’.  He lived for most of his life in South Littleton.  See also pages 5, 7, 12.
