DEATH OF MR SIDNEY IDIENS – Senior Partner in Evesham Firm

Evesham has lost yet another of its most respected citizens and business men in the death at his home on Tuesday of Mr Sidney Idiens of Aldington Lodge, Evesham.

Ir Idiens, who was 63 years of age, was the senior partner in the old-established Evesham firm of Messrs Frank Idiens & Sons, and was well known and highly respected over a wide area.  His large circle of friends will mourn his passing and extend great sympathy to his widow, Mrs Edna M Idiens, his three sons, David, Simon and Bruce, and his only daughter, Mrs Jane Price.

In his younger days, Mr Idiens will be remembered as one of the town’s leading sportsmen.  He was an enthusiastic member of the Evesham Sports Club, was highly skilled at hockey and had played for Worcestershire in representative games.  He was also a keen golfer and was a prominent member of Evesham Golf Club and was popular on the club’s course at Fladbury among the other members.

During the First World War, Mr Idiens volunteered in the early days and served firstly with the 19th Hussars.  Later he was commissioned and seconded to the Machine Gun Corps, was wounded twice and was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry.

On his demobilisation, he returned to Evesham and joined his father in the fruit and vegetable merchants’ business.

His social activities locally included Freemasonry; he was a Past Master of the Abbot Lichfield Lodge, and he was also a committee member of the National Federation of Fruit and Potato Trades.

Cremation takes place today (Friday) at Cheltenham, followed by a memorial service at noon at St Lawrence Church, Evesham.
