SOLDIER’S WEDDING AT PERSHORE – Sergt R Porter and Miss E Knight
Six Sergeants of the Worcestershire Regiment formed a guard of honour at the picturesque wedding of a colleague at Pershore Abbey on Saturday afternoon, which was witnessed by a large attendance. The Vicar, the Rev Lancelot G Bark, officiated.
The bridegroom was Sergeant Reginald Alfred Porter, third son of Mr & Mrs Alfred Porter of the Church Row, Pershore, and his bride, Miss Edna Nash Knight, daughter of Mr & Mrs C Knight of The Leys, Badsey, Evesham.
The Sergeant has been a soldier for over four years. His father, who was a reservist in the RAMC when the Great War broke out, went with the first British Expeditionary Force and was taken prisoner by the Germans during the retreat from Mons, spending almost a year in captivity until an exchange of prisoners took place.
The bride, who was given away by Mr Charles Whiting, her brother-in-law, wore a dress of white satin beauté, embroidered veil with coronet of pearls and orange blossom, and carried a bouquet of mauve chrysanthemums and ferns. She was accompanied by her sister, Mrs Alice Whiting of Badsey, and Miss Violet Porter, sister of the bridegroom, who each wore a dress of mauve silk georgette, hat and coatee to tone and carried muffs of the same colour and material. They also wore silver brooches, the gift of the bridegroom. Mr A W Porter, a brother of the bridegroom, officiated as best man.
The reception was held at the home of the bridegroom’s parents, who entertained many relatives and friends from Pershore and Badsey. Among the numerous wedding gifts was a handsome silver cake stand from comrades in the Regiment.
