- John (“Jack”) Melville Hodges (1891-1974). In the 1930s, he was one of the main people involved in the organization of the All England Sprout Picking Championship. At the time of the 1921 census, he was described as a manager and fruit buyer for L L Farrington, fruit grower. In the 1939 Register, he was living in Swan Lane, Evesham and described as a Master Market Gardener. He became Mayor of Evesham during 1951-53. In the broadcast, he related how growers would light fires in their orchards to minimize the damage that can occur in young fruit due to late frosts in the Spring. He also talked about the arrival of gypsy caravans in the Vale in June each year., and also families from the Black Country to help with the harvests. See also pages 7, 13-14, 17, 18, 19.
