Gilbert Stanley (1903-1977), a market gardener on his own account, lived on Ivy Lane, Bretforton.  He spoke about his experience of being the first man to win the Sprout Picking Championship of the World, when the competition started in Evesham some years before.  He may have been brought on to the 1940 programme because George Hunting (the most recent winner of the championship who had appeared on the 1937 programme 4½ months after his win) was not participating.  See also page 25.
