Medieval Re-enactment - The House of the Twin Tailed Lion

The House of the Twin Tailed Lion provides medieval re-enactment like no other group.  They are an authentic 13th-century re-enactment group based in Evesham, primarily covering the events of the second Barons’ War, the conflict between Henry III and some of the greatest English magnates in the mid 1260s. They portray Simon de Montfort’s household and retinue, with combat, living history, camp life and medieval crafts, including woodworking, blacksmithing, and clothes-making.

Wickhamford Church Appeal for Repairs

Help Save Our Historic Church

An appeal has been made to raise a considerable amount of money for repairs to the church roof and chancel ceiling of the Church of St John the Baptist, Wickhamford. Full details of the work that needs to be undertaken, and the costs involved, are given in the twelve-page leaflet shown below, which has been produced by the Parochial Church Council. It also gives information on how to donate and how to join the Friends of St Johns in their efforts to raise money for the necessary work.

Development of Allsebrook Gardens and the construction of Badsey’s current vicarage

Some interesting papers were discovered in the loft of the current vicarage containing letters and plans relating to its construction and the development which was built in place of the old manse. The letters are predominantly from Christ Church, Oxford, who owned the land and the Worcester Diocesan Dilapidations Board who dealt with the disposal of old vicarages that were in need of either renovation or demolition. The letters are addressed to Rev. Peter Braby who was the incumbent at the time.

Excavating Milestone Ground, Broadway

Jamie Wilkins, Archaeological Project Officer at Explore the Past, gave a talk about the exciting excavation which took place recently at Broadway which explored its habitation from prehistoric times, through Roman settlement into the time of the Anglo-Saxons.  His enthusiasm for the dig shone through and what it has revealed so far is tremendous. Milestone Ground is important both in terms of Worcestershire and nationally, and its finds will be part of archaeological research for some years to come.

SANDYS-LUMSDAINE, Leesa (1936-1985) – artist with a Wickhamford Connection

Leesa Sandys-Lumsdaine died in Jedburgh, Scotland, on 20th December 1985. Her connection to Wickhamford is that her mother, Joyce Sandys-Lumsdaine, and two of her siblings, bought Wickhamford Manor from George Lees-Milne in 1947.   Joyce, her brother Patrick George Leeson and sister Cynthia Murial Batty paid £10,400 for the Manor and six and a half acres of land (see Leeson Family at Wickhamford Manor).
