PAID UNDER PROTEST AT EVESHAM

At Evesham on Monday, Arthur Edwin Horne, market gardener, Pitcher’s Hill, Wickhamford, was summoned for non-payment of a poor-rate amounting to 9s. 2d. Defendant said he had tendered part of the rate, but refused to pay the whole of it. He admitted the rate was according to the law, but he wished to make a public protest. The Chairman (Mr. R.F. Torres) said the Bench would decline to allow the defendant to do that. He must either pay the full amount of the rate and expenses (5s.), or they should issue an execution warrant. Defendant said he would pay under protest.

Comments

The defendant’s name was Arthur Edwin Thorne, not Horne.
