BADSEY WANTS MORE SPACE FOR RECREATION – But Where? Parish Council Discuss the Problem

After Miss Wilson of the Worcestershire Rural Community Council had spoken at Friday's meeting of Badsey Parish Council on the possibilities of obtaining a grant towards the provision of another playing field for the village, it was decided that she should contact the County Planning Authority to ascertain their views on using Wheatley's Orchard, in the centre of the village, as a playing fleld – in which case the proposed village hall could be built there and land at Horsebridge Avenue released for housing.

The Chairman, Mr G A King, reminded the meeting, which was attended by representatives of the local cricket and football clubs, that the area of the present recreation ground was about 3½ acres, but Badsey needed at least 6 acres of playing field.

One suggestion put forward was to take land to extend the present recreation ground, Miss Wilson pointing out that this might be more economic in maintenance.

A negatiye answer was given when Mr A J Brewer asked if there had been any offers from owners of land adjoining the recreation ground.

When another member suggested that if this land could be obtained. the proposed village hall might be erected on a part of it, Mr F E Jones said it would be no more central than the site at Horsebridge Avenue. He reminded the meeting of the special parish meeting a few months ago at which strong opposition was made to a suggestion from Evesham Rural District Council to erect houses on Wheatley’s Orchard.

Mr G H Stewart asked if a rate could be levied for a playing field, Miss Wilson replying that this could be dine but it would be very much better if the money could be raised voluntarily.

At the close of a very interesting discussion, the Chairman thanked Miss Wilson for her advice and help.
