Saturday 1 April 1939 – Charles Tutton of Blackminster awarded gold medal for public speaking

Charles Henry TuttonMr C H Tutton of Blackminster, Evesham, winner of the J W Rose Memorial Shield and gold medal at the 16th annual musical festival of the GWR at Reading on Saturday.  He brought the trophy to the Midlands for the first time.

He was placed first out of twelve competitors in the Senior Open Class for public speaking.  The adjudicator described Mr Tutton’s speech as witty, fluent, on an ideal subject.

In addition to winning the shield, Mr Tutton won merit certificates for public speaking and debating.  Last year, in the novices’ class, he was placed second, gaining a bronze medal.
