ALDINGTON WANTS PARISH COUNCIL

In the old clubroom of the little hamlet of Aldington, two miles from Evesham, about 30 of Aldington’s population of 144 yesterday discussed, somewhat heatedly at times, what they could do to improve the amenities of the village.

After a somewhat stormy start, when the chairman, Mr W H Butler, Aldington’s representative on Evesham RDC, found himself in one or two tight spots, the meeting decided that they should hold another meeting in the not too distant future with a view to making application to the Worcester County Council for an Aldington Parish Council to be formed.

Another proposal, which was accepted, was that put forward by Mr Phil Hancox, who, though only a newcomer to the village compared to some of those present, was strongly armed with local knowledge, and had, in a small case at hand, a booklet outlining the laws of local government, which proved a valuable ally on numerous occasions.

Mr Hancox proposed that Mr Burton should write to the RDC requesting the installation of a sewer age scheme at Aldington – a somewhat long-felt want.

As Mr Hancox pointed out:  “We pay 11d out of our 16s 8d rate for sewerage, but get nothing for it.”

Then, and still armed with his local government manual, Mr Hancox was formally elected to assist Mr Butler in the capacity of clerk.

The meeting also decided to apply to the GPO for a stamp machine to be installed in the village, and that the RDC should be asked to reallocate two new houses to “locals instead of foreigners”, and to ask for six new Council houses to be built.
