GROWERS BROADCAST FROM EVESHAM
Evesham was “on the air” last night when local growers and workers took part in a programme which described the work connected with the local fruit and vegetable growing industry. The programme, which was arranged by Robin Whitworth in co-operation with Mr C H Gardiner, clerk to the Evesham Rural District Council, and Mr C A Binyon, JP, was relayed from the Evesham Town Hall.
The Mayor (Councillor Alfred Johns), who is a grower himself, described the Vale as “that pleasant corner of Worcestershire” and drew attention to the beautiful sight to be seen in the Vale within a few days, when the fruit trees will be in blossom.
Mr Binyon described the growth and development of the market gardening industry in the Vale, and growers and experts told of their labours in the production of asparagus, onions, peas, strawberries, cherries, plums and Brussels sprouts.
Those who took part included Messrs Frank Clarke and Ralph Smith (Littleton), Messrs Jack M Hodges (Evesham), Adam Howley (South Littleton), J E Knight (Badsey), Walter Harwood (Offenham), James Williams (“Jimmie Teapot” of Campden), George and John Emms (North Littleton), W J Newman (Hinton), Jack Bent (Badsey) and George Hunting (Ashton-under-Hill), the champion sprout picker, Mrs Stella Byrd (Bretforton) and Mrs Heritage.
