SHUTE, George – Curate of South Littleton

George Shute (1779-1840) conducted one marriage, two baptisms and one burial at Badsey during the period 1811-1819, whilst Curate at South Littleton.

George Shute was born in 1779.  He was a student of St John’s College, Oxford, ordained as a deacon at Christ Church, Oxford, on 13th June 1802, and as a priest on 18th December 1803.  He was awarded MA in February 1805.

George married Anna Ball at Winterbourne, Gloucestershire, on 16th August 1809; George was described as “of Clapham, Surrey”.  They had three children:  Theodore Henry (1812-1860), Eleanor (1815-1861) and George (1819-1837).  The first two children were baptised at Winterbourne whilst the youngest was baptised at South Littleton on 23rd May 1819.

At the time of his death in April 1840, Reverend Shute was Vicar of South Littleton.  He was buried in the church of St Michael the Arch, South Littleton, on 25th April 1840.  At the time of the 1841 census, his widow, Anna, and their daughter, Eleanor, were living at Frenchay, Winterbourne, Gloucestershire.  Anna died in 1845 and was buried at Frenchay on 8th September 1845.
