GROVE, Dennis Edwin (1880-1960) – Worcestershire Regiment/Labour Corps

Private Dennis Edwin Grove (1880-1960) moved to Wickhamford after his period of service in the war.  Dennis Grove was the son of gardener’s labourer Edwin Grove and his wife, Eliza.  He married Ellen Johns Smith in Evesham in 1900 and in the 1901 census he had the same occupation as his father and lived in Chapel Street, Evesham.

He joined the Worcestershire Regiment (No 21750) in 1914 or 1915 and only his medals record remains.  He was awarded the 1915 Star, Victory and British War medals.   He served overseas, in the Balkans, landing on 9th October 1915, according to his medal record sheet, but his battalion is not indicated.  This date does not tally with the fact that the 11th (Service) Battalion of the regiment, the only one sent to the Balkans, landed in Salonika on 24th November 1915.  He was later in the Labour Corps (No 128340) and was demobilised on 18th February 1919.  His name appears on the 1919 Absent Voters’ List as from the parish of Evesham St Lawrence.

Dennis and Ellen Grove are both on the Wickhamford Electoral Register for 1924, living at 11 Council Cottages on Pitchers Hill.
