Found at Badsey Hall - Envelope addressed to Miss Emery of Montpellier House (now Badsey Hall)

Description

Torn scrap of an envelope, Henry Brace & Co Ltd stationery, addressed to Miss Emery (Henry Brace & Co were a wholesale army and hunting saddlers company, based in Walsall; there were Emerys who were bridle makers living in Walsall at the time of the 1881 census). The postmark is unclear, but it can be dated to 1880 because of the stamp; this one penny stamp was part of the provisional issue of 1880. Montpellier House was then a Ladies' Boarding School.

Supporting Information

The Stone House (or Badsey Hall as it is now called) was owned by Arthur Edward Jones from 1915 until his death in 1950. It remained unoccupied for a number of years and became semi-derelict. In 1969, it was bought by Peter Marriott who employed Mick Taylor to renovate the building. Mick (born Michael Raymond Taylor at Aldington in 1944) was a builder by trade and lived at the house from 1969-1972 whilst working on it. He found several scraps of paper under the floor-boards and kept them in case they were of significance.
