DOCKRAY, Margaret Beatrice

Biographical Details

Margaret Beatrice Dockray (1854-1941) was described as the cousin of Charles Binyon in his autobiographical details.  She was actually his first-cousin-once-removed, her father, John David Dockray, being the younger brother of Charles’ grandfather, Robert Benson Dockray.

Margaret Dockray was born at Winslow, Buckinghamshire, on 16th May 1854, the second of three children of John David Dockray and his wife, Elizabeth.  Margaret was only three years old when her father died.  The family remained living on Station Road, Winslow, certainly until the death of their mother in June 1871 when Margaret was 17. 

At the time of the 1881 census, Margaret and her sister were visiting Devon.  By 1891 they had settled at Chelston Bank, Cockington, near Torquay.  Mary died there in 1905.  Margaret was still living at Chelston Bank in 1911 with one servant.  By 1939, she had moved to a flat in Torquay, 6 Kents Terrace.

Margaret died at St Clements Nursing Home, Torquay, on 23rd April 1941.

Charles Binyon was one of the executors of her will.  The other was Robert Fynes-Clinton who had connections by marriage with the family.
