1911 Census

Census Date: Sunday 2nd April 1911

The 1911 census form was quite different to earlier forms. For the first time, the head of household completed the form and signed at the bottom. Very occasionally, the form was completed by someone other than the head, perhaps a son or daughter completing it on behalf of a parent.

With regard to employment details, there was the opportunity to give further details of the business carried on by the employer. A person also had to indicate whether he/she was an employer, a worker or working on own account, and also whether he/she worked at home. For married women, there were new questions concerning number of years married and number of children born alive in the present marriage, further broken down into total children born alive, children still living and children who had died. If a person was born overseas, he/she had to indicate whether a British subject by parentage, a naturalised British subject, or state nationality.

Information about the household included: the schedule number, the address as given on the census and the number of rooms in the house. The question about rooms differed from that in previous years. Whereas the question in 1891 and 1901 concerned number of rooms if less than five occupied, the 1911 question asked for the total number of rooms in the house; the kitchen could be counted, but not the scullery, landing, lobby, closet, bathroom, warehouse, office or shop.

The 1910 - 1915 Valuation Survey provides additional information about the house.
