Text of Letter

The Rising Sun, Lydd, Kent

Mrs Ashwin sent me an Evesham Journal yesterday and I was so delighted to see that Cyril is a Captain now. Hasn’t he done simply splendidly. I congratulate you all most heartily. Frank’s Major is trying very hard to get him a commission but the Colonel will interfere and say he is too old. He has had several offers, it is too bad. We leave here on the 16th and go to Fareham to mobilize – I don’t know how long we shall be there – not very, I fear and then I shall be left desolate. We shall have been here 6 weeks.

I hope you have been better lately and not having your dreadful colds. Wasn’t that a fearful storm. We often have Zepp scares here but they never come. They ordered even candles to be put out once and it is so difficult to go to bed in the dark! I hope you have good news of the other sons. If you see Mrs A will you give here my best love and thanks for the EJ. I will write to her from Fareham.

Much love to you all and the family.
