The letter-writer is Sarah Avery (maiden name unknown) who was born in England on 16th September 1869. She probably worked for the Sladden family in the early 1890s; her mother was still living in Badsey or the vicinity in 1914.

According to Canadian census returns, Sarah emigrated to Canada in 1894 (or 1892 as some say). She married Frederick Avery (born 2nd October 1870, England), known as Fred, probably in 1894 or early 1895. Her only son, Robert Frederick (known as Rob), was born on 4th September 1895. In 1921 Sarah was living was with her son in Walpole Municipality, Saskatchewan. Fred died suddenly on 9th June 1914. Sarah died in 1957 at Kelso, Saskatchewan, and her son on 16th February 1966, also at Kelso. Frederick, Sarah and Robert are all buried in Riga Cemetery.

As at 2018, Saskatchewan marriages are not yet online, so it has not been possible to determine Sarah’s maiden name.
