Biographical Details

Major Gerard Thomas Noel (1856-1941) was a Justice of the Peace for Gloucestershire and was a prominent person in the locality.

Gerard Noel was born on 13th May 1856 at Exton, Rutland, the eldest son of the Honourable Henry Lewis Noel, JP, and grandson of the 1st Earl of Gainsborough.

On 19th January 1888 Gerard married Edith Mary Byron.  They had four children:  Cecily Mary (1888), John Byron (1891-1969), Audrey (1894-1966) and William Henry Middleton (1894-1966).

Gerard was a major in the 3rd Battalion Durham Light Infantry from 1900.

From about 1909 to the 1920s, the Noel family lived at Temple Guiting House near Winchcombe and held the office of Justice of the Peace for Gloucestershire (in a letter of October 1914, Mela Brown Constable described him as living at Broadway, but that was incorrect).  He later moved to Devon where he was also a JP.

Major Noel died on 9th November 1941 at Leigh House, Holcombe, Dawlish, Devon, aged 85.
