Margaret Irene Phillips, née Williams (1885-1975), known as Irene or Rene, was the elder sister of Mary Christabel Sladden (née Williams) who had married Arthur Sladden in April 1914.

Irene was born on 23rd April 1885 at Ponlottyn, Glamorganshire, the second of nine children of the Reverend Llewelyn Morgan Williams and his wife, Georgina (née Rowlands).  Her elder sister had died as a baby, she was in effect the eldest in the family.  By 1890, when Irene’s younger sister, Georgina Millicent, was born, the family was living at Dowlais where their father was the Rector.

Irene married a doctor, Evan William Monger Hubert Phillips (known as Hubert) in 1911 in the Merthyr Tydfil district.  Hubert was an old university friend of Arthur Sladden who had become engaged to her younger sister, Mary.

Irene and Hubert lived at The Park House, Port Talbot, Glarmorganshire, where Hubert had a medical practice.  They had one son, Geoffrey Hubert Nigel, born in 1913.

Irene died in 1974 in the Neath district of Glamorganshire, having survived her husband by 25 years.
