Biographical Details

Percival John Sladden (1874-1947), known as Percy, was the nephew of Julius Sladden, being the son of Julius’ elder brother, Dilnot (1842-1906).  Percy is mentioned in one letter written by his sister, Dolly, on 3rd October 1915.

Percy Sladden was born at Oxford, Canterbury, on the south island of New Zealand on 19th January 1874, the fifth of 11 children of Dilnot and Elizabeth Sladden.  He and his siblings were known collectively as “the Oxford Eleven”.

Percy married Mary Bouchier Bristow on 23rd December 1902 at Marton.  They had one son and five daughters, but the youngest daughter died in infancy:  Dilnot Bristow (1904-1965), Mary Jessica (1905), Bessie Letitia (1906), Margaret Charlotte (1909), Frances Dora (1912) and Joyce (1913-1913).  They lived at Marton.

Percy died on 10th August 1947 at Wanganui, his wife, Mary, having died seven years earlier.
