Charles Davies VAUGHAN (1868-1915)

Biographical Details

Charles Davies Vaughan (1868-1915) was the brother-in-law of Juliet Sladden’s schoolfriend, Joyce Ashby.  He is mentioned in two letter written shortly after his death.

Charles was born at Brynog, Trefilan, Cardiganshire, on 22nd August 1868, the fifth of nine children of Captain Herbert Vaughan, late 68th Regiment, and his wife, Julia Radclyffe Patten (née Davies).  He was educated at Marlborough College (1879-1880), Cherbourg Naval College (1880-1881) and the United Services College at Westward Ho! (1881-1887), the latter place being where Rudyard Kipling, just a couple of years older, was educated).  Charles was gazetted to the Border Regiment in 1889.  He served on the North-West Frontier of India and in the South African War.  He was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order in 1902 “in recognition of services during the operations in South Africa".

On 14th August 1913, Charles married Dorothy Jean Ashby at Maymyo, Mandalay, Burma (Myanmar).  The 1st Battalion Border Regiment was still in Burma on the outbreak of the First World War.  They returned to England, landing at Avonmouth on 10th January 1915 and moved to Rugby.

The 1st Battalion Border Regiment, with Charles as Second-in-Command, sailed from Avonmouth on 17th March 1915 for the Dardanelles and landed at Cape Helles on 25th April.  He was killed in action at the landing on 26th April 1915.  Charles is buried at Pink Farm Cemetery, Helles, Turkey.
