Evelyn Audrey & Charles Herbert Wynnington SMITH (1900-1959 & 1903-1964)

Biographical Details

Evelyn Audrey Smith (1900-1959) and Charles Herbert Wynnington Smith (1903-1964) were the great-nice and great-nephew of Eugénie Sladden, being the children of her niece, Evelyn Fanny Smith (née Butler).  They are referred to as “the children” in a letter of 22nd March 1916 by their grandmother, Fanny Butler.

Evelyn was born at Byfleet, Surrey, on 20th April 1900.  The main family home was at Bramerton, West Byfleet, Surrey, but it seems that her parents owned or rented more than one property, so the family sometimes stayed elsewhere.  Evelyn married Thomas George Cuthbert Garrard, a colonial broker.  In 1939, Evelyn and Thomas were staying in the home of her brother at Little Brittons.  Evelyn died on 26th April 1959 aged 59 at Five Trees Nursing Home, Ascot; her address was 2 Holland Park Mews, London, at the time of death.

Charles was born at Byfleet, Surrey, on 1st September 1903.  He married Mary Elaine and they had a daughter.  By 1939 they were living at Little Brittons, Spring Woods, Virginia Water, Surrey.  His occupation was given as Petroleum Company Official now employed as a civil servant; he also acted as an air raid warden.  Charles died aged 60 on 4th April 1964 at King Edward VII Hospital, Clewer, Windsor.
