Margaret Augusta UPPLEBY (née BROWN CONSTABLE) (1870-1951)

Biographical Details

Margaret Augusta Uppleby, née Brown Constable (1870-1951), known as Maggie, was the aunt of Mela Brown Constable (the fiancée of Cyril Sladden).

Maggie Brown Constable was born in 1870 at Cheltenham, the eleventh of 12 children of Charles Brown Constable by his second wife, Mary Christina (née Mackenzie).  Her father was a retired Lieutenant-Colonel in the Indian Army.

Maggie married George Crowle Uppleby on 15th January 1891 at St Matthew’s Church, Hammersmith.  They lived at Barrow Hall, Barrow on Humber, Lincolnshire, where her husband, George, was Vicar.  George Uppleby was a distant relative of Mildred Preston, wife of the Vicar of Offenham, the neighbouring parish to Badsey.  They had one daughter, Emily Margaret Cecilia (1898-1934), known as Cecilia.

Maggie died on 17th October 1951 at Daisies, Southborough, Kent, which was where her brother, Fred, lived in retirement until his death in 1942, and where her younger sister, Clemmie, lived.  Maggie’s husband had died in 1939 and her daughter had pre-deceased her in 1934.
