AGG (later VICKERY), Gwendolen May – emigrated 1913

Gwendolen May Agg was born at Badsey on 4th April 1902, the third of five children (but second surviving child as an older brother had died at just a month old) of Joseph Foster Agg and his wife, Emma (née Wilkes).  She was baptised in St James’ Church, Badsey, on 15th June 1902.  It is likely that Gwendolen was born at 1 Belmont Terrace (present-day No 13 Willersey Road, Badsey), which is where the family had been living in 1901.  By August 1906 they had moved to one of the new houses across the road at No 12 Cotswold View (56 Willersey Road).  By 1911, they had moved into the slightly larger house next-door, No 11 (54 Willersey Road).

Gwendolen was a pupil at Badsey School from April 1905 to 7th August 1913.  Twenty days later she emigrated with her family to Canada, setting sail on 27th August 1913 from Liverpool.

Gwendolen and her family lived first at 640½ Euclid Avenue, Toronto, then, by March 1916 had moved to Palace Road, Whitby, Ontario, a town in Durham region, on the north shore of Lake Ontario, about 35 miles from Toronto.  At the time of the 1921 census, Gwendolen’s parents and two brothers lived at 115 Dundas Street, Whitby, but where Gwendolen was is not known.

Gwendolen married Herbert Wilson Wright on 6th August 1924 at All Saints, Whitby.  Just over four months later she was widowed when Herbert, who worked in the lumber industry, died as the result of an accident.  A posthumous son, Joseph Herbert (1925-1990) was born in April 1925.  Gwendolen married again on 1st January 1929 to John Wesley Tinwell Vickery.  They had a son, John Ronald (1931-1991).

Gwendolen died at Whitby, Ontario, on 11th November 1970.  Her widowed husband died in 1977.
