Dear Mr Sladden

I was pleased to receive your letter with reference to your heart’s desire to be engaged to my daughter, Mela.  It appears a very happy incident judging from all I hear from Mela, and Mr H A Brown Constable appears satisfied also, so Barbara and I too join in sharing your joy.  I hope Mela will prove herself all that you wish, she is worthy of a good man’s love, and I can but pray that all will end as auspiciously as it has begun.

Meantime we will endeavour to look forward to cementing your friendship into a bond of love and affection for our dear child’s sake, as well as your own.

Believe me with earnest wishes for your future happiness.

Yours very sincerely

C Brown Constable
