Joseph Noakes MOURILYAN (1834-1870)

Biographical Details

Joseph Noakes Mourilyan (1834-1870) was the cousin of Eugénie Sladden (née Mourilyan).

Joseph Noakes Mourilyan was born in Camberwell, Surrey, in 1834, the elder of two sons of Joseph Noakes Mourilyan and his first wife, Mary (née Bishop). Joseph was baptized at St Mark, Kennington, on 30th October 1834.  It is thought that his younger brother died in infancy.

Joseph became a solicitor like his father.  On 2nd October 1867, Joseph married Susannah Fry at St Paul, Deptford, Lewisham.  Two months later, his father died.

Joseph Junior died in London in November 1870, aged 36, and was buried in Highgate Cemetery.

In a letter of 21st December 1870, Fred Mourilyan, writing from Roumania, refers to Aunt Marianne’s son.  Joseph Noakes Mourilyan Junior was actually Marianne Mourilyan’s step-son (his father, who had died in 1867, had married Marianne in 1864 following the death of Joseph’s mother in 1861).  Mail between Roumania and England took several months to arrive, so he did not know that Joseph had actually died in November 1870.
