COOPER, Henry Portmore – Vicar of All Saints with St Lawrence, Evesham

Henry Portmore Cooper (1775-1827), whilst Vicar of Evesham, conducted a total of eight services at Badsey.  He officiated at a burial at Wickhamford in March 1819 in the interregnum between Curates, William Squire Rufford and Cudworth Bruch, and then, during the curacy of Charles Bloxham, he officiated at two baptisms, one marriage and four burials at Badsey.

Henry Portmore Cooper was born on 3rd June 1775.  He was awarded BA from Worcester College, Oxford, in 1798.  He was ordained as a deacon at Hartlebury Castle on 25th July 1798 and as a priest in 1799.  Reverend was licensed as a Curate at All Saints and St Lawrence, Evesham, on 25th July 1799, then appointed Vicar of All Saints with St Lawrence on 23rd January 1808, a post which he held until his death in 1827.  On 14th October 1808 he also became a schoolmaster at Evesham Free Grammar School, and on 7th March 1814 he became Curate at Great and Little Hampton, becoming Perpetual Curate on 25th July 1816.

Henry married Margaret Hudson Scott on 22nd May 1810 at Willersey.  They had one son, Henry (1813), who later became Rector of Willersey.

Reverend Cooper died at Evesham on 18th August 1827.
