Allsebrook Gardens

How did the road get its name?

Allsebrook Gardens is named after Canon William Carmont Allsebrook, Vicar of Badsey and Wickhamford from 1903-1945, who was also Rural Dean of Evesham from 1921-1945 and Honorary Canon of Worcester Cathedral from 1930-1946. The old Vicarage where he lived was demolished in 1971, ten new houses were built on the land, and a new Vicarage was built in the High Street.

In 1950 the Trustees of the Estate of John Pickup Lord sold the land they owned in Wickhamford to Christ Church College, Oxford. An attempt had been made in 1930 to sell 631 acres of market garden land, pasture and ash coppice, mainly in Wickhamford plus 36 houses and three cottages. Synehurst Avenue

How did the road get its name?

As with the first phase of Council housing development in the 1920s when houses were built along Synehurst, Synehurst Avenue is so-called because of the old field name.  The land was known as Seaneys Ground at the beginning of the 19th century but, by the beginning of the 20th century, it was known as Corner Ground or Sinehurst.  The land used to belong to Aldington but it became part of Badsey in 1921.

Midsummer Walk – Broadway

We no longer had the staggeringly high temperatures of earlier in the week, but thankfully the rain held off.  Jane Neill led us on a pleasant evening stroll in and around Broadway discovering the story of this beautiful village.  Jane pointed out various places of interest, including the house where the Conservative MP, Sir Gerald Nabarro, once lived, and Court Farm, where Mary Anderson, an eminent Shakespearian actress of her day, once lived.  We met outside The Lygon Arms and finished the evening at The Crown and Trumpet – a perfect end.

Richard Phillips Memorial Lecture - Houses from the first Ordnance Survey Map

The second Richard Phillips Memorial took place on Friday 28th April 2017 at Badsey Community Sports & Social Club with 45 members present.  Richard's partner, Lizzie Noyes, began proceedings with a few words saying that Richard would have been pleased to think that his work with The Hive at Worcester was the subject of tonight’s lecture.  She also mentioned that she was accompanied tonight by Richard’s son, Will, who was carrying on the good work by developing a new website for The Badsey Society.
