My dearest Mother

No doubt you have received our happy news before I, for the telegram only reached me this evening about 20 hours after my daughter was born. Hubert’s wire stated that Mother and daughter were doing well, so I hope all is satisfactory. I’m so happy to know we have a child and you a granddaughter, and all I want now is to get back and see Mary and our baby. She is a very punctual arrival I think. I’m very thankful that the long days of waiting are done, it has been a long and lonely time for Mary I know, but she’s been very brave and sensible throughout and I trust that she is now able to realise to the full her happiness and mine. Goodnight Mother dear, I hope that having a grandchild won’t make you feel very old. As soon as possible the baby must come and see you and her grandfather, and her paternal aunts.

With much love to you and Father and all at home.

From your son
Arthur
