My Dear Kathleen,

You seem to have come off with flying colours in your work last week and I hope it betokens that you are feeling quite well again, it is difficult to do one’s-self justice when feeling seedy.  I hope your entertainments will go off well this week, to-morrow there are to be dramatic performances, afternoon & evening, at the old school in aid of the bell fund.

May spent last Sunday at the Davies’, friends of Anna Robinson, and seems to have quite enjoyed it, she also likes going to the Jeffries, she had dinner and tea there.  I should have been very pleased if she could have taken the 3rd form, however of course she is young for it, only they might have discovered that before raising any expectations, still I am in hopes she may settle down at Croydon, for a time at least and earn her promotion as time goes on, we shall be satisfied if she is happy and comfortable even if has to be content with moderate remuneration at starting. What a lot you two girls will have to talk over when you meet.  Mother has engaged a young servant, Clara by name, to come in when “Lump” departs, we shall be singularly unfortunate if it should prove a change for the worse.  Our new top for the kitchen range was put in on Saturday and is a decided improvement, we got it done by Burlingham’s in ten days, I expect Rodway would have taken as many weeks! for the old top had to be sent as a pattern and a new one specially cast.

Auntie Lottie is going to send Arthur his birthday cake to save Mother trouble.  Baby gets quite heavy now, she generally sleeps well and is certainly a good little thing, I feel sure you will find her very much grown next holidays.  They want Jack to go to Folkestone at Easter and as the sea air would no doubt brace him up more than this I have told him to go if he likes, we must do all we can to keep him up to the mark during the next few months.

With much love from us all
I remain your affectionate Father

Julius Sladden
